Ingredients

6 slices of thick-cut brioche or challah bread

3 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

2 tbsp brown sugar

1/4 cup butter

2 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced

1/2 cup apple pie filling (optional)

1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Powdered sugar, for dusting

Ice cream or whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

Prep the Bread: Start by cutting the brioche or challah into thick slices, about 1 inch thick, and set aside.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and brown sugar until well combined.

Heat the Skillet: In a large cast iron or non-stick skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

Dip the Bread: One at a time, dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated. Allow any excess custard to drip off before placing it in the skillet.

Cook the Bread: Place the coated slices of bread in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy. Add more butter as needed.

Prepare the Apples: While the bread is cooking, prepare the apple topping. In a separate pan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Add the apple slices, and sauté them for 4-5 minutes, or until they start to soften. If using, add the apple pie filling at this stage and mix well. Cook for another couple of minutes until everything is warmed through.

Assemble the Skillet: Once the French toast is cooked, layer it in the skillet if you have room, or transfer to a serving platter. Top generously with the sautéed apples and, if desired, sprinkle the chopped walnuts or pecans on top.

Serve: Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.
