Ingredients

4-5 lbs pork shoulder (also called pork butt)

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 tablespoon onion powder

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 tablespoon brown sugar

2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 medium onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand or homemade)

Buns for serving

Pickles and coleslaw for topping

Instructions

Prepare the Spice Rub: In a medium bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Set this blend aside.

Season the Meat: Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. Rub the spice mix all over the pork, covering it thoroughly for maximum flavor. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes at room temperature or ideally overnight in the refrigerator.

Set Up the Slow Cooker: Pour the chicken broth and Worcestershire sauce into the bottom of the slow cooker. Add the sliced onion and minced garlic for a base layer of flavor.

Add the Pork: Carefully place the seasoned pork shoulder on top of the onion and garlic in the slow cooker.

Cook Low and Slow: Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours. The pork should be tender and easily shred with forks.

Shred the Pork: Once cooked, remove the pork shoulder from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board. Use two forks to shred the meat, discarding any large chunks of fat.

Mix with Sauce: Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker. Stir in the BBQ sauce until the meat is well-coated. Allow it to cook for an additional 30 minutes on low for the flavors to meld.

Serve: Toast your buns, if desired. Pile the pulled pork high on the buns and top with pickles and coleslaw for a classic Texas-style experience.
