Ingredients

1 tube (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough

1 pound breakfast sausage (spicy or mild, based on preference)

½ cup chopped onion

2 cloves garlic, minced

½ teaspoon black pepper

¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups whole milk

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

4 large eggs

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)

Fresh parsley or chives for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

    Prepare the sausage mixture:

      - In a large skillet over medium heat, add the breakfast sausage. Cook until browned and crumbled, about 5-7 minutes.

        - Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until the onion is soft and translucent, about 3-5 minutes.

          Make the gravy:

            - Sprinkle the flour over the sausage mixture, stirring to combine. Cook for another 2 minutes, letting the flour absorb the flavors.

              - Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and is creamy, about 3-5 minutes. Season with black pepper, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and thyme. Remove from heat.

                Prepare the biscuit base:

                  - Open the tube of biscuit dough and cut each biscuit into quarters. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.

                    - Spread the biscuit pieces evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

                      Combine and assemble:

                        - Pour the sausage gravy mixture over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish.

                          - In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and shredded cheddar cheese until well combined. Pour this mixture evenly on top of the sausage gravy.

                            Bake:

                              - Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the egg mixture is set and the biscuits are golden brown.

                                Serve and garnish:

                                  - Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or chives for a pop of color.
